Sky On Fire

On June 25, 2015, record setting heat colored the evening sky a blazing fire scape over Middletown, California. This amiable little town is situated 20 miles south of Clearlake, 17 miles north of Calistoga and 1 hour east of Highway 101. Map of the area.

No matter how you approach, the scenery traveling to Middletown is beguiling. You meander through vineyards, orchards, grazing livestock, diaries and mountain forest. You pass through small towns vivid with history and an agrarian way of living. Old California ranch life is still evident and holding on.

Nearby Clearlake offers boating, fishing and nature abundant. The inviting town of Calistoga has the California wine scene covered in a warm and friendly manner. Middletown itself is small and laid back. It’s the perfect base camp for a weekend of exploring this region of California.

I stayed at the  Backyard Garden Oasis and completely escaped from the cares of the world and heat. This tiny but very special place – just 3 private and well-appointed cabins – is located on the edge of town in a genuine garden oasis. Old growth trees of Oak and Pine, vegetable and herb gardens, and many, many bird species make this tranquil spot so special I didn’t want to leave.
