Why are there so many balconies in Malta? What does their Maltese name, il-gallarija Maltija, mean?
I heard more than one story about the ubiquitous Maltese balconies. My favorite said centuries ago the balconies were a place for women to sit and watch life on the streets below. From their perches, they could not be seen from below, protecting their modesty.
I was lucky enough to have a Maltese style balcony in one of my lodgings on Gozo. I found it to be the coolest place in the apartment. The prevailing sea-breeze drifted in through small vents carved in the wood. Natural air-conditioning.
I took photos of over 100 balconies on Gozo and Malta. I chose these 12 to share. I think they cover most of the balcony styles I saw.
